The official Guinness World Record for the largest grilled cheese sandwich ever made was certified last summer at a small community food festival in rural Ohio, United States, drawing hundreds of onlookers and supporting hundreds of local low-income families
Most people who love comfort food know a standard grilled cheese sandwich only weighs around 120 to 150 grams, made of two slices of soft white bread, a thin layer of melted cheddar, and a little bit of butter spread on the surface to get that perfect golden crispy crust. It is a go-to after-school snack for kids, a quick lunch option for busy office workers, and a nostalgic dish that reminds most North American people of their warm childhood memories. A small group of home baking enthusiasts in a tiny Ohio town never thought their casual plan to make an “extra big” version of this beloved snack would turn into a verified Guinness World Record that made local headlines across the whole Midwest region.
The team of seven home cooks spent more than 18 months preparing for the attempt, long before the 2024 Ohio Grilled Cheese Festival opened to visitors. They tested 19 different small batch recipes to figure out the exact thickness of sourdough bread slices, the perfect ratio of different types of melting cheeses, and the right temperature to bake the whole giant sandwich evenly without burning the outer crust or leaving the center cold. They worked with local metal workers to build a custom 2-meter long outdoor stainless steel grill that could hold the massive sandwich, and invited independent food safety inspectors and licensed notaries to monitor the whole process to meet all of Guinness’ strict application rules. The final sandwich used a total of 68 kilograms of fresh sourdough, 74 kilograms of high quality cheddar and mozzarella mix, and 12 kilograms of unsalted butter, with a measured size of 1.9 meters long and 1.3 meters wide.
When the official Guinness World Records adjudicator flew to the small town to conduct the final certification, the whole event area was packed with over 270 local residents and tourists who waited for more than two hours in mild summer heat to see the final weighing result. The final accurate weight of the finished, fully cooked sandwich came out to 77.85 kilograms, which was nearly 21 kilograms heavier than the previous world record set in 2018 in Wisconsin. The whole crowd burst into cheers the second the adjudicator announced the official number, and many attendees took out their phones to record the historic moment for their social media pages. Unlike many other large food challenge attempts that throw most of the finished product away after measurement, the team arranged for all edible parts of the giant sandwich to be cut into small 30-gram pieces and handed out free to onlookers right after the certification was completed.
The remaining 40 kilograms of sandwich pieces that were not taken by visitors were immediately packed into insulated food containers and sent to three local food banks that serve low-income families and homeless populations in the three neighboring towns. According to the local community service coordinator, the giant sandwich donation fed more than 1,300 people in total, and the food banks got more than 200 new volunteer sign-ups from local residents in the two weeks after the record certification. The team’s lead organizer, a 42-year-old home economics teacher at the local middle school, said he never expected the silly little hobby challenge to create such a big positive impact on the community, and he never planned to attempt to break the record even further in the future. He explained that a sandwich any bigger than 78 kilograms could never get even heat distribution, which would leave the center cheese half melted and ruin the core texture that defines a good grilled cheese, making the whole challenge meaningless to people who truly love this comfort food.
Six months after the official certification, the small town that once had less than 1000 permanent residents now sees more than 300 out-of-town visitors every weekend, who come to try the limited edition “record replica mini grilled cheese” sold at the festival site’s permanent snack shop.
